James L. Allen Center, Northwestern University
AAMG Academic Museum and Gallery Leadership Seminar
June 24-29, 2012
In partnership with the Kellogg School of Management
Center for Nonprofit Management at Northwestern University
When and Where
Program begins at 5 pm Sunday, June 24 and ends Friday, June 29 at noon (for those wishing to remain, a Friday afternoon session will be offered on AAM Accreditation standards for academic museums).
Seminar attendees will be housed at the James L. Allen Center., Northwestern University's Evanston Campus, a first-class conference center/dining facility/residence on the banks of Lake Michigan.
A Day at the Seminar
Course study and reading materials will be posted for participants to review prior to the participants' arrival in Evanston. A Sunday evening orientation and dinner will begin the program; formal instructional activities will end at noon on Friday (with an optional Friday afternoon session led by AAM's accreditation administrator Julie Hart for leaders from non-accredited museums wishing to explore accreditation). A typical Seminar day will begin with breakfast at the Allen Center, followed by two 90-minute sessions on an individual topic in the morning; lunch; and two 90-minute sessions on a second topic in the afternoon. A total of nine focused topics will be covered by the Seminar (See
Course Topics). The evening might include a casual dinner at the Center among colleagues, or a trip for all participants to an area museum or private collection for informal discussions on topics ranging from ways to sustain a lifetime career in the field -- with all of that career's social, political and personal demands -- to ethical issues surrounding collecting.
Post-Seminar Engagement
Participants will receive an AAMG/Kellogg Certificate upon completion of the Seminar. Continued interaction and exchange of ideas and experiences will sustain the Seminar's experiences long after the week of study on Northwestern's campus has concluded. A listserv designated specifically for students and faculty members will be maintained for further discussions and for posting or seeking individual faculty advice on issues of importance to the participants. In addition, the program director will actively engage Seminar participants in a public discussion of their experiences and insights on the AAMG's 3,000 plus member AAMG-L listserv, in order to open the dialogue within our larger field of colleagues. Finally, Seminar graduates attending the 2013 AAMG Annual Conference in Baltimore will be invited to participate in a panel discussion and offer insights into how they have put their Kellogg learning experiences into action at their home museums and galleries.
