The Assistant/Associate Curator of Education is a dedicated museum educator with particular interests in student and community-based programming including work with college students, intergenerational groups, schools/youth, families, faculty, seniors, and access groups. Part of making the museum a platform for creativity and innovation, curricular learning and co-curricular life, citizen and cultural engagement, the Assistant/Associate Curator of Education shares a pedagogical and programmatic approach to engaging with art in dialogue with the educational vision of Williams College, and with best practices in higher education and participatory museum experience.

As a member of the dynamic Engagement/Education team, the Assistant/Associate Curator of Education has the opportunity to oversee and be involved with numerous WCMA signature campus art programs as well as William’s extensive and varied multidisciplinary arts offerings such as WALLS (Williams Art Loan for Living Spaces), a special collection of original artworks destined for student dorm rooms, Exploring The Arts – First Year, Agents for Creative Action (yearlong program), Creating a Culture of Respect (7th-8th grade) and more. Professional development and contributing to the field of museum, education and curatorial studies are supported. Research, reflection, and evaluation practices are instrumental to our work and integrated into a holistic process of our own learning and spirit of experimentation.

Broad Responsibilities:

  • As a new position, this role will represent WCMA’s teaching philosophy and commitment to utilizing the unique and generative resources of the WCMA collection, special exhibitions, public programming, historic and architecturally significant building, and Williams College itself towards learning in museums.
  • Possible program oversight based in participatory and dialogue-based pedagogy could include design of Public Tour, Group Visit, School Experiences, Access and Family programs or other ways in which a WCMA visit is a vital public engagement with works of art and the vision of artists.
  • This position will be responsible for bringing together museum operations, exhibitions, interpretation, research, engagement and other departments in staff preparedness for the WCMA museum experience around seasonal programming cycles.
  • Acting as the primary point person to museum educators and group visits including scheduling, pre-visit intake, tracking, and evaluation.


  • Bachelors in art history or related humanities field or Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), Studio Art required
  • To be considered for Associate-level role, MA/MFA graduate level work in museum studies, art education or related field desirable, or equivalent experience
  • Skilled and flexible teacher with works of art
  • 3 years experience in museum education and program coordination required
  • To be considered for Associate-level role, comprehensive program management experience is required
  • Knowledge of global art history with strong interest in contemporary practice and multidisciplinary forms
  • Experience in overseeing/managing educators and staff trainings
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in developing programs and exhibitions engaging the academic community as well a broader public and/or special audiences
  • Familiarity with college/university setting a plus
  • Schools/Youth/Family program/teaching experience of interest
  • Commitment to making art accessible by way of new and innovative strategies, including digital
  • Strong written communication and public speaking skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate across organizational structures.
  • Efficient administrator; familiar with budgets, database, museum office/digital soft-wares
  • Experience in working across cultures and with audiences of varying needs; languages helpful
