UC Irvine Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art at University of California, Irvine (Langson IMCA) seeks an Executive Director of Development to lead its annual and capital fundraising efforts. The museum and institute were established in 2017 following the gifts of two important private art collections of modern and contemporary California art. Under the leadership of inaugural Museum Director Kim Kanatani, an acclaimed arts educator, Langson IMCA aspires to become the epicenter for the appreciation and study of art that emanates from and is inspired by California. As an essential partner of a leading research university, Langson IMCA brings together students, faculty, scholars, artists, alumni, and the general public to generate new knowledge and learning, and foster transformative experiences inspired by the art of California and its global contexts.

The Executive Director of Development reports to the Interim Deputy Director, with a dotted line relationship to the Museum Director and the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. The office environment is hybrid, requiring an on-site schedule of at least two days a week and as needed to fulfill responsibilities, including some evening and weekend activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and direct large-scale annual and capital fundraising activities for Langson IMCA, with a goal of personally securing $3 million or more in new gifts each year towards the museum’s strategic priorities.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of 60-100 major gift prospects (individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies, as warranted). Conduct at least 12 meaningful contacts per month and qualify at least 40 new major gift prospects annually through personal appointments. Prepare and implement cultivation strategies, write complex proposals, as required, and actively solicit and steward gifts.
  • Prepare and support the Museum Director and other unit leaders to participate effectively in development activities and prospect appointments. Work closely with campus leadership, key faculty, and University Advancement (UA) colleagues to support the Museum Director’s fundraising priorities.
  • Supervise the services of a contract grantwriter and work in coordination with the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations to identify opportunities and prepare applications to institutional funders; and when funded, help to ensure contract fulfillment.
  • With museum leadership, steward the new Directors Council, an advisory board whose members serve as ambassadors advocating on behalf of the museum within the community.
  • Evaluate and re-launch a membership program to engage the general public.
  • Organize cultivation and stewardship events, such as exhibition previews, gallery tours, member receptions, etc. to build community among donors, prospects, and constituents.
  • Direct annual campaigns, including Langson IMCA’s participation in UCI Giving Day, as well as a year-end campaign.
  • Collaborate with the various UA offices, including stewardship, research and prospect management, gift services, and annual giving to advance prospects. Use the UA prospect management and tracking system.
  • Participate as a member of the UA constituent development team, in development activities across campus, and serve as a resource for other unit-based development colleagues about Langson IMCA fundraising opportunities.
  • Represent Langson IMCA at museum, university, and community functions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., arts, humanities, education, nonprofit management) is required; master’s degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of relevant fundraising work experience, preferably in higher education or museums and cultural organizations, or the equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of fundraising and donor relations best ethical practices, policies, rules, and regulations, and ability to maintain confidentiality. Knowledge of community relations.
  • Demonstrable experience in stewardship that leads to additional investment by donors.
  • Superior written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and its internal and external constituencies. Facility in making persuasive and compelling presentations.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with high level analytical, critical thinking, and program management skills, with the ability to prioritize and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, while handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Facility with Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, or comparable donor management software.
