Position Focus:

Reporting to the Nolen Curator of Education and Academic Affairs and working closely with the Bradley Associate Curator of Academic Affairs and the Katcher Curator of Programs, the Manager of Student Engagement leads the Gallery Guide program, training Yale undergraduates to design and deliver public Highlights Tours. It coordinates all Highlights Tours and other tours offered through the program. It situates the Gallery as a hub for student engagement, responding to existing interest and promoting Gallery programs and resources to make the museum relevant to students’ extracurricular lives and personal growth. Through the program, the position forges connections between the Yale and New Haven communities.

The Gallery Guide program is a paid opportunity for Yale undergraduates to develop and lead thematic, close-looking tours for the visiting public which includes members of the Yale and New Haven communities and beyond. Students participate in a yearlong training program overseen by this position to learn about the collection and how to lead inclusive, interdisciplinary conversations around artworks. In addition to becoming critical and observant museumgoers, Gallery Guides develop transferable skills in public speaking, visual literacy, research, and creative thinking. Following the completion of the training, students give tours regularly and participate in weekly training sessions.

Leads the Gallery Guide program: administers all aspects of the program; recruits and trains 12 new and manages about 25 returning Guides to offer inquiry- and discussion-based Highlights Tours; guides students’ research and writing; ensures high-quality tour experience and provides ongoing feedback to Guides; designs expanded training and engagement opportunities (including the development of Smartify tours) for advanced returning Guides; designs surveys to assess and enrich visitor experience on tours; liaises with Collection Curators, Visitor Services, Security, Editorial and other staff; plans and attends all Gallery Guide excursion activities; supervises and mentors the Goodyear Interns in Education, who serve as Head Gallery Guides; organizes the Undergraduate Night of the Arts.

Liaison to the student community: envisions and implements strategies to deepen student extracurricular engagement with the Gallery; conducts outreach to raise awareness and promote programs and resources; leads non-course visits for undergraduates at Yale and other universities; manages application process for named Gallery internships; organizes academic-year and summer enrichment programs for interns as needed; contributes to first-year student outreach programs.

The work-week schedule for the position is Tuesdays – Saturdays, including Thursday evenings during the academic year when the Gallery is open until 8 pm.

Essential Duties:

1. Supervises the day-to-day activities of support staff. 2. Assesses and resolves or escalates problems arising within unit. 3. Assists in the development of policies and procedures in support of unit. 4. Assists in long-range planning for work unit needs. 5. Participates in unit budget planning. 6. Evaluates work requests to determine if they are appropriate to the unit or another area. 7. Ensures that work flow is organized and staffed for quality efficient completion. 8. Communicates deadlines and special circumstances to staff. 9. Maintains equipment and supplies for unit. 10. Completes evaluations of direct report employees. 11. Interacts with University personnel to define work assignments and requirements, communicate progress of work, and plan and coordinate projects. 12. Interacts with external sources to coordinate work necessary to fulfill projects, keep abreast of new products and technologies, or arrange for subcontractors. 13. Supervises a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

MA in Art History, Museum Education, Museum Studies, or related field and 2 years of museum programming experience. Practical proven experience with object and inquiry-based teaching. Proven experience working with undergraduate students, guiding research, and assessing writing. Demonstrated proficiency in scheduling & logistics. Academic coursework in art history.
