Museum Education Lead – The Joseph Moore Museum


The Joseph Moore Museum, on the campus of Earlham College, seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and motivated educator with experience in online education to lead our transition to online education with a particular focus on high school science programs. The Lead will work with the director, collections manager, student leaders, and community members to design and deliver inquiry-based programs on a wide variety of topics ranging from biomedical science to Native American studies. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate familiarity with Common Core State Science standards for Indiana and Ohio (licensed teacher preferred) as well as object-based learning. The Lead must be willing to work extensively with Earlham College students, providing co-curricular support for their college learning experiences. This is a part time, 1 year, grant-funded position.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop creative ways to enhance the classroom experience for Earlham College students
  • Convert existing in-person field trips to virtual experiences for k-12, with assistance from EC college students and faculty
  • Train EC college students to lead virtual field trips for k-12 students, placing emphasis on high school audiences using newly designed programs
  • Recruit K-12 classes for virtual field trips, schedule field trips, schedule EC student field trip leaders
  • Build and maintain sustained relationships with teachers in the community
  • Administer all aspects of the program including marketing, scheduling, and assessment
  • Contribute to an inclusive environment for Earlham College students working with and studying in the museum community

Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience providing informal science education to children and youth
  • A commitment to the field of museum education and an interest in continued study in pedagogical strategies and practices 
  • Ability to demonstrate, engage, challenge, and interest young people in the natural world
  • Experience designing and implementing developmentally appropriate curricula 
  • Experience working in customer service roles, ideally in a museum or non-profit environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities, plan ahead, anticipate and articulate program needs
  • Ability to problem-solve, be flexible, and imaginative
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • BS in biology and/or education, or museum studies with an education focus
  • Preferred: Appropriate Indiana or Ohio teacher license, experience with Reflecting on Practice Program and/or NAI certification process
