The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens is located on the University of Texas at El Paso campus. The Museum chronicles the natural history of the Chihuahuan Desert through its collections, permanent and temporary exhibits, a botanical garden and educational programs. Additionally, the Museum showcases research done by UTEP faculty, as well as border life and culture.
Position: Curator of Collections and Exhibits
The Curator is responsible for overall management of the Centennial Museum’s collections as well as exhibits, both temporary and permanent, and for programs to educate the public about the materials exhibited or stored. He or she works with other staff members, student assistants, and contracted personnel, to accomplish this.

Essential Functions
- Directs activities concerned with the instruction, acquisition, exhibition, safekeeping, research, and public service objectives of the museum.
- Manages the Permanent Collections, maintaining donor and object record files; processes objects into the permanent collections via standard accessioning and cataloging methods; photographs and digitizes collections and records; writes annual reports regarding held in trust collections; monitors security of building and other collections areas; designs, with expert advice as required, new exhibits and texts.
- In collaboration with the Director, plans for traveling exhibits.
- Develops in-house temporary exhibits, researching the storyline, working with outside experts as appropriate.
- Works with a part-time preparator and oversees the installation and removal of temporary exhibits.
- Provides outreach to the UTEP community and the general public by conducting special tours, giving presentations, assisting with visitor inquiries, responding to research and publication questions.
- Participates in writing of grants to secure funding related to museum collections and exhibits.
- Develops and updates collection policies.
- Travels as appropriate to represent the museum at professional conferences and workshops.
- Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software, PastPerfect and File Maker Pro.
- Complies with all State and University of Texas System policies.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, Sociology or Anthropology.
- Minimum five years of museum experience, related to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree
- Knowledge and experience with natural history collections (archaeology , biology, geology), especially of the Chihuahuan Desert and/or the indigenous people of the Chihuahuan Desert region.
Working Conditions
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 pounds, or large objects that require mechanical assistance. Standing or walking may occur up to 40% of the time.
Work may be performed in an office, museum or field environment.
