Assistant Professor: Historic Preservation Program, University of Oregon (Portland)

The University of Oregon Historic Preservation Program invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as the Art DeMuro Assistant Professor in Historic Preservation to begin in September 2017.  This position is based at UO’s Portland campus.

The successful candidate for this position will have begun a record of relevant and innovative research and professional practice in one or more of the following areas: Cultural Resource Management, Building Sciences, and Heritage Conservation.  The Program seeks candidates who demonstrate an understanding of the role of preservation in addressing issues of cultural diversity and who will have an interest in broadening the field to incorporate underrepresented constituencies.  A strong interest in the West or Pacific Northwest region is desirable, and the Program seeks candidates with the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and communities of diverse backgrounds. Qualifications include a terminal graduate degree from an accredited institution which must be attained before September 15, 2017 (doctoral degree or master’s degree as expected in the candidate’s academic field), preferably in historic preservation or a closely related field.

The UO Historic Preservation Program resides within the School of Architecture & Allied Arts (A&AA).  With the support of a major individual gift, the Program recently relocated from the University’s main campus in Eugene to its new headquarters in the 1883 cast iron front White Stag Building in the Old Town district of Portland.  The new location houses state-of-the-art facilities – library, classrooms, studios, offices, conference facilities, and woodshop/lab – that will elevate the educational experience for the Historic Preservation Program.  The city of Portland offers faculty and students a vast laboratory of physical and cultural landmarks, a strong network of professional practitioners, and significant resources for research, including the Oregon Historical Society archives and the Architectural Heritage Center’s collection of historic building components.  For more information, see http://hp.uoregon.edu.
