The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University (CAM) seeks applicants for a full-time Curator of Education and Collections. The curator will develop, implement and manage educational programming for the Niagara University community and public audiences. Educational programming—including exhibitions, lectures, workshops, classes and professional development opportunities for educators—will be informed by research of the CAM’s distinguished collection.
In fulfilling the position’s essential duties, the curator will: train docents to assist with tours and other educational programming; consult with educators from regional schools to create partnerships with the CAM; schedule and coordinate school (and other) tours; prepare relevant educational materials and activities for tours and exhibitions; maintain contact information, needs surveys, assessments and evaluations for CAM educational programming; serve as the liaison between the CAM and University faculty; develop active/integrative learning opportunities for University faculty and students; assist with students and interns from the University’s Art History with Museum Studies Program; supervise the CAM’s annual summer camp staff; research and assist in writing grants to support the CAM’s educational programming.
Niagara University is a private, four-year liberal arts institution founded in 1856 by the Vincentians, a Catholic religious order. The 160 acre campus runs along the top of the Niagara River gorge just four miles north of the world renowned waterfalls. Positioned on the international border between the United States and Canada, the campus is within easy driving distance of both Buffalo and Toronto. The Castellani Art Museum, a 23,000 square-foot marble-faced building, is located at the center of Niagara University’s campus. Seven galleries branch off a 4,200 square-foot central gallery, one of the largest exhibition spaces in Western New York, and an excellent venue for a variety of public programming. The museum also includes a classroom available to both University faculty and CAM staff.
The curator’s position requires excellent oral and written communication skills; the capacity to work both as part of a team and independently on multiple projects; and the ability to work successfully with people of all ages from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Applicants must have an advanced degree in Art History or an undergraduate degree in Art History with an advanced degree in a related field such as Museum Studies. Some experience working in a museum setting is preferred, but not required. Salary is commensurate with experience and full benefits are available.
