Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art – The Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University 

Founded in 1974, the Ulrich is a nationally recognized university art museum emphasizing modern and contemporary art and based in the largest metropolitan area in Kansas.  The WSU outdoor sculpture collection was noted among the Top Ten in Pubic Art Review in 2006. Museum endowments generously support active collection acquisition. With 6,250 square feet of gallery space, the Ulrich presents a schedule of 8 to 10 rotating exhibitions annually, regularly self-organized, traveling shows or drawn from the permanent collection of over 6,700 works of art. As a university art museum devoted to teaching and learning, the Ulrich explores the power of the visual arts to communicate with and expand educational opportunities for the diverse community of Wichita State University, Wichita and the region.

The Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art balances responsibilities for University and community engagement through modern and contemporary art, with acquisitions, collections development and exhibitions.

The Curator works collaboratively with staff in a team environment on exhibition development and installations, as well as implementation of related education programs and publications. They may curate and develop original content for exhibitions, museum/gallery programs, and publications. An ability to cultivate patrons and collectors, engage faculty and program partners, serve artists, and connect with students are important traits for the successful candidate.

The Ulrich Museum of Art seeks an individual committed to applying broad-based learning strategies to creatively interpret and contextualize contemporary art for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The Curator reports to the Director.

A Master’s degree in art history, art, or related field is required. Candidates must have experience with curatorial organization of exhibitions and collections development, public speaking, grant writing, working effectively with students through teaching or other engagement activities, working collaboratively in a team based environment, working closely with collectors and prospective donors and evidence of past innovative interdisciplinary programming and clear writing skills.
