The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA) in Jacksonville, Florida, a cultural resource of the University of North Florida, seeks a director of development – a key staff position within a dynamic organization dedicated to the cultural, educational, and urban fabric of the Jacksonville community and the University of North Florida.

The director of development creates and executes a comprehensive giving program: prospecting for and cultivating major gifts, identifying and writing successful proposals and grant applications, overseeing the membership program, managing donor relationships, and establishing endowment campaigns as directed. The successful candidate will expand giving, bring excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation), and possess a keen ability to multi-task within a creative and collaborative work environment, and with key partners at the University. The position reports to the Museum’s Executive Director and the Vice President of University Development and Alumni Engagement at the University of North Florida.

Job Responsibilities

  • Leads all aspects of individual giving, from identifying, cultivating, and maintaining major donors to moving them appropriately towards solicitation and closure.
  • Researches and connects with foundations, corporations, and government sources to expand base of support within and beyond region.
  • Initiates and implements fundraising efforts for special projects.
  • Writes solicitation proposals.
  • Prepares annual budget, revenue, and expenses, for department.
  • Works effectively with community stakeholders and cultivates relationships and support for the arts through educational opportunities.
  • Prepares and presents reports to Development Committee.
  • Works with the MOCA staff to oversee special event fundraising opportunities, exploring new possibilities for event enhancement.
  • Ensures that all Development Department efforts are in compliance with the Museum’s mission, policy, and procedures, and uphold AAM guidelines.
  • During a declared emergency, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off-site location or place of residence.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization and three years of experience directly related to the job functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Related experience may include a combination of fundraising experience, volunteer board management, external sales, external/community affairs, business development, marketing, or experience that involves reaching out to external constituencies to engage more closely with the organization or company that you represent.
  • Experience and comfort working with donors, trustees, high net-worth individuals, and diverse constituencies.
  • A track record of successfully closing major gifts and meeting contributed income goals in a competitive fundraising environment.
  • Strong ability to think and plan strategically combined with tactical implementation skills and budgeting acumen.
  • Ability to develop and mentor a close team while collaborating effectively with senior management to achieve broader institutional goals.
  • Appreciation for arts and culture; fundraising experience for a contemporary arts organization preferred.
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or comparable fundraising software.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work evenings/weekends and to travel as needed.
  • Entrepreneurial personality with an ability to work successfully in dynamic work environment.
  • In conjunction with the University’s policy, this position requires a level II background check which includes fingerprinting. Based on the specifics of the actual job functions, the position may also require a credit check.
