Education Coordinator: Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (KAM) invites applications for a full-time, ten-month, Education Coordinator.

KAM has a rich, varied, and comprehensive collection of approximately 10,000 works of art ranging from the fourth millennium BCE to the present, representing an extensive array of cultures and media and reflecting the museum’s educational mission. KAM presents 15 or more exhibitions a year (most of them organized by KAM) and over 150 educational programs and special events. Since 2004, KAM’s exhibitions have traveled to 28 cities in the United States and beyond. The museum is identified with initiatives that involve wide-ranging artists, ideas, and media, as well as those that explore compelling issues of contemporary culture and society. The topics and artists represented in its exhibitions and accompanying publications provide creative opportunities for the interdisciplinary programming that has become a signature of KAM.

KAM is an engaged partner in the intellectual work of the campus, involving students and faculty in research and development of exhibitions and museum publications, organizing interdisciplinary workshops and other exhibition programming, and inviting renowned artists and scholars to campus. Most of KAM’s exhibitions and projects actively involve faculty, students, and staff as initiators, partners, and subjects. Increasing KAM’s integration into the curriculum and enlisting more of the intellectual assets of the campus into the museum’s exhibition and educational objectives are major priorities.

Primary Position Function/Summary:
Education Coordinator joins the Education team and reports to the Director of Education. This position coordinates the education partnerships, both internal to the university and community driven, using innovative cross-disciplinary programming developed by the KAM’s education team.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
•    Coordinate and facilitate the museum’s in-depth K-12 school programs, such as KAM-WAM (Krannert Art Museum – Week at the Museum), KAM-BAM (one-day at the museum), and other educational initiatives, including:
o Serve as primary liaison to schools and teachers in the coordination of programming and schedules.
o Conduct planning workshops and other meetings with teachers.
o Co-develop curriculum with colleagues and schoolteachers that takes advantage of the museum environment while meeting the needs of the schools.
•    In cooperation with curatorial and collection staff, research the museum’s exhibitions and collections to create engaging and hands-on curriculum.
•    Develop, procure, and organize teaching materials.
•    Teach lessons to various audiences in the museum galleries and off-site (on/off campus). Audiences can be comprised of school-aged children, college students, the general public, and older adults. Teaching will be conducted either individually or collaboratively.
•    Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and student hourlies (graduate and undergraduate) who support the museum’s education and community engagement programs.
•    Collaborate with the Education Director and KAM staff on development and implementation of the museum’s public programs, such as artist talks, music and dance performances, family events, open-mic nights, etc.
•    Promote the services that Krannert Art Museum provides to the K-12 community, alumni, senior care facilities, and the general public. Build positive relationships with faculty, students, and administrative staff, as well as with educators and museum professionals.
•    Travel is required for off-site workshops and engagement efforts. Some evening/weekend hours are required.
•    Assemble and transport materials including lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Required Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art Education, or related field.

Preferred Education: A Master’s degree in Art History, Art Education, or related field.

Required Experience: Minimum of one year teaching experience.

Preferred Experience: One to two years teaching experience in an art museum education, or related position. Previous experience in the development of curriculums, as well as facilitating workshops.

Training, Licenses or Certifications
Required: Valid driver’s license.

Required Knowledge:
•    The ability to promote teamwork, creativity, and open communication.
•    Excellent planning and organizational skills, strong written and oral communications, and the ability to concurrently manage multiple tasks.
•    Self-directed and motivated individual with a well-developed ability to engage successfully with children.
•    Proven ability to work with a very diverse audience including but, not limited to; varying age groups and individuals with disabilities or special needs.

Appointment Status: This is a full-time, 10-month academic professional position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
