Gallery Director and Assistant Professor: James Madison University

The School of Art, Design, and Art History invites applications for the position of Gallery Director beginning July 1, 2017. This is a full-time, tenure-track, 12-month, Assistant Professor faculty position requiring museum or gallery management and curatorial experience. The Director will serve as the chief curator and manager of the Duke Gallery of Fine Art, a new, 3,000 square foot, state-of-the-art exhibition space. The Director will also serve as a consultant to the faculty curators of New Image Gallery and as mentor to student interns for artWorks, the university’s student-run gallery.

The Gallery Director reports to the Director of the School of Art, Design, and Art History and is responsible for all operational activities of the Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art. These duties include curating exhibitions, directing installations, managing transportation, preparing loan requests and contracts, overseeing the budget, fund-raising and grant writing, producing exhibition catalogues, and organizing interdisciplinary public programming that engages the campus and wider Harrisonburg communities. The Director will teach ART 496 Gallery Internship each semester, and will supervise student interns and MFA graduate students for exhibition preparation and programming. The Director will have the special opportunity to develop a curatorial vision by bringing cutting-edge contemporary art of national and international significance to a new gallery within a fully renovated building dedicated to the visual arts.

Teaching 1-2 courses per year, or during summer session, is required within the program areas of art history, design, and studio arts on topics such as contemporary art, museum studies, new media, and gallery practices. Active participation in scholarly and/or creative activities is required. The School of Art, Design, and Art History at JMU is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
