The University Galleries at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) are seeking venues for an exhibition project – In Search of the Miraculous – featuring artists whose work reflects upon the ocean and the practice of surfing in literal, psychological and critical ways.
The artists in In Search of the Miraculous range from emerging to internationally renowned and are both seriously committed surfers and non-surfers alike. They live and work across four continents, reflecting the internationalism of the art world, the surfing world, and the pervasiveness of ocean culture across the globe. The exhibition focuses on art made after 2000 and includes paintings, sculpture, film, photography and multimedia works. The exhibition also includes media stations with video documentation of activism and scientific inquiry around critical questions about surfing, surf culture and the ocean as a site of human activity.

5 –7 video projectors and/or flat screens; 8 –12 pedestals with/without Plexiglas vitrines; high ceilings (over 15 ft.) for some works
On Site / Special Installations
University Galleries, FAU will invite one or more artists to create installations for the opening exhibition that may or may not be included in the traveling exhibition. University Galleries encourage participating venues to work with artists to create/install work(s) specific to each venue’s presentation/installation.

Catalogue / Publication
The exhibition catalogue will combine images of art in the exhibition, artists biographies, and essays by authors including “Surf Studies” scholars on currently relevant subjects included in books such as The Critical Surf Studies Reader (2017, Duke University Press); Surfer Girls in the New World Order (Comer, 2010, Duke University Press); and Surfing and Social Theory (Ford & Brown, 2006, Routledge).

The University Galleries, FAU will present a multidisciplinary series of lectures and films reflecting the planned catalogue publication
