Manager of Museum Building Operations, Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art (UC Davis)

The  Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art is under construction and is slated for completion in 2016-17 as the capstone of a planned “arts district” at UC Davis’ new front door alongside Interstate 80. The 30,000 sf Museum is dedicated to education and  will serve a primary audience of faculty and students as the lens through which it will engage a broader audience. With architecture underway, the Museum team is now defining a provocative program steeped in the university’s legacy of making, its physical  presence in the Central Valley, and the university’s role as a progenitor of conceptual art in California.

The  Manetti Shrem Museum is a start up environment that requires flexibility, initiative, willingness and the ability to problem solve. The incumbent must be creative and enjoy working within a small, entrepreneurial team that is mission-driven, results-driven,  and community oriented. Must have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, exhibiting perseverance and grace under pressure. Requires strong written and verbal communication, project management and organizational skills, and the ability  to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities.

Reporting  to the Deputy Director, the Manager of Museum Building Operations is responsible for overseeing effective management of the museum building and grounds. The position oversees maintenance of a safe and secure physical environment for Museum staff, visitors,  and artwork on exhibit and in collections storage. Leading up to the Museum’s opening, the manager will work with the Design Construction Management team to ensure that building systems are in place and operating efficiently.
The  position is responsible for overseeing the safe, secure, effective and efficient monitoring and operation of the museum’s overall physical plant including all plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. The Manager of Museum Building Operations oversees all  systems related to the specific needs of the art museum including LED gallery lighting, temperature and humidity control, and security functions, with particular attention to safety and security of artwork. The position also manages and coordinates custodial  services and grounds maintenance. The Manager will work with museum staff and other University departments to coordinate and evaluate facility related operations, policies, and procedures and to ensure proper maintenance and safety procedures are implemented  to safeguard staff, visitors, art and physical property.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience in comparable role in a museum or other visual art setting in a building of similar size and complexity leading design and construction of major renovation  projects.
  • Demonstrated experience managing department, project, and program budgets.
  • Working knowledge of museum standards related to security and safety of art collections, lighting and conservation of artwork, temperature and humidity requirements, and visitor  safety and security.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, electrical, safety procedures, and cleaning supplies/equipment.
  • Working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, lighting, plumbing, electrical, and audio-visual to ensure oversight of system functionality.
  • Knowledge of basic building security procedures and fire prevention techniques.
  • Experience reading blueprints and understanding construction drawings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to clearly provide information and direction to staff, contractors, and vendors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with LED lighting in a museum setting.
  • Combination of experience and/or formal training in HVAC, and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (M.E.P.) systems.
  • Knowledge of physical plant operations in a dynamic environment including a working knowledge of centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, pumps and Building Management Systems controls.
  • Experience using managerial and leadership skills to lead by example and encourage collaborative efforts
  • Experience in launching new projects and/or working in start-up environments.
  • Acquaintance with and enthusiasm for visual arts and museums.
  • Experience using interpersonal, communication, collaborative, negotiating and team-building skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, faculty,  vendors, volunteers and university officials, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism and discretion.
