Position Summary
The Princeton University Art Museum seeks to appoint a Museum Application Developer to join its Information and Technology department to become an integral part of the Museum’s Collections Discovery Initiative (CDI,) an ambitious and intensive redevelopment of information architecture, technology stack, and online interfaces. Working in a team environment, the Museum Application Developer will report to the Associate Director for Information and Technology and work in close coordination with the Manager of Collections Information.
This is a full-time 30-month term position and is subject to the University’s background check policy.
Duties and requirements include:
· Design, develop, and implement tools and systems for processing and transforming the museum’s collections and exhibitions data from SQLserver tables to JSON, JSON-Id, and other RDF formats
· Design and configure tools for faculty, students, and the general public, for optimal utilization of the Museum’s collections information
· Replace the search and discovery user interfaces for the collections and exhibition data and test for optimization
· Establish a RESTful API for open access to collections data and maintain and monitor the Museum’s Github repositories
· Configure and deploy open source and commercial software such as Elasticsearch and Drupal
· Use and manage cloud-based services
· Implement and manage International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) compliant image and manifest servers
· Script scheduled processes of image upload to cloud servers, automating the generation of JPEG2000 derivatives for IIIF compliance
· Document all development of software and system architecture
Essential Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree
· Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
· Experience developing and deploying production quality applications and complex, interoperable systems
· Experience with one or more modern programming languages such as Ruby, PHP, Python, or Javascript
· Experience developing and modifying web applications and command-line shell programs
· Understanding of software development best practices and principles
· Understanding of metadata standards, data models, and data encodings that relate to art collections, such as Dublin Core, EAD, IIIF, RDF/Linked Data, REST
· Experience with theory and practice of relational databases such as SQL Server
· Familiarity with the Linux command line and shells (e.g. bash)
· Experience developing and deploying production systems in a Linux environment
· Familiarity with version control systems and collaborative development systems (e.g. Git/Github, SVN)
· The ability to work effectively in a team context, establish priorities, and achieve goals
Preferred Qualifications
· Familiarity with International Image Interoperability (IIIF) specifications
· Experience in the Cultural Heritage sector
