General Purpose: Reporting to Deputy Director for Exhibitions, Programming, & Education, the Nolen Curator of Education & Academic Affairs generates & leads the educational vision of the Yale University Art Gallery. This position is responsible for developing a cross-disciplinary pedagogical & philosophical approach to teaching with objects, & for developing & realizing a strategic plan for enhancing & effectively managing the department’s academic & public outreach, partnerships, & programs. Within the first year, s/he will be responsible for laying out the overarching education priorities in preparation for the development of a Gallery-wide strategic plan under the next Director.
This position fosters innovation & collaboration in teaching with objects; promotes knowledge of the collection through teaching, publications, exhibitions, & outreach; & works with curators on exhibition & permanent collection installations to ensure effective educational impact of display & interpretation. Promotes integration of collections into Yale & other academic curricula, school & youth education, & adult learning opportunities; oversees & is responsible for balancing the Gallery’s educational offerings for various audiences (Yale faculty & students; school, youth, adult & community groups; & teachers, families, & adult visitors); & supervises staff members’ implementation of these endeavors.
S/he develops a strategy for responsible use of the Gallery’s education-specific spaces, including 2 public education rooms, the Jane and Richard Levin Study Gallery, & 6 total object study classrooms in the Nolen Center for Art & Education & the Gallery’s new, off-site Margaret & Angus Wurtele Study Center. Working closely with colleagues & collaborators outside the Gallery, develops & implements new approaches to outreach & exhibition planning for the Levin Study Gallery & oversees installations related to Yale courses & other educational endeavors.
As head of the Gallery’s Education Department, this position supervises & mentors curatorial-level positions at the assistant to senior associate level, 2 departmental administrative assistants, a large staff of graduate & undergraduates, & Fellows, contributing to development of future leaders in the museum field. Generates & oversees budgets for the Gallery’s academic & education programs. Works with the Gallery’s Director, administration, and Advancement department; contributes to fundraising initiatives for teaching programs & exhibitions; stewards Governing Board members, donors, collectors, students, & faculty.
S/he is an expert in some aspect of museum education & academic outreach, & an active scholar in their field of specialization, publishing & participating fully in the intellectual life of the University. S/he actively contributes to & advocates for excellence in the field of museum education & promotes the Gallery’s profile as a unique educational resource for Yale, for New Haven and surrounding communities, and for greater New England. S/he serves as a leader in the emerging field of Academic Programming & Curatorship and as a representative of the Gallery in the field of college and university art museums, actively working to advance the reciprocal contribution higher education & art museums can make toward excellence in both arenas. S/he periodically conceives & organizes professional development workshops and conferences in the fields of academic outreach and museum education and serves on professional committees dedicated to furthering the mission of academic programming at college and university museums. Occasional night & weekend hours required. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Education and Experience: Ph.D. in Art History, Education, or related field and seven years of professional museum experience in the areas of education or curatorial or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualifications:
- Excellent skills as a leader, manager, and administrator as evidenced by a record of progressive roles and responsibilities in a museum and/or teaching environment. Demonstrated expertise in museum education, school and youth programming, academic outreach, and student engagement.
- Ability to think strategically toward the Gallery’s long-range academic and education program, profile at the University and in the community, and position in the field nationally and internationally.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with collaborators at the university, in the community, and in the field, as well as with diverse museum audiences. Ability to exercise excellent interpersonal skills and relate well to all kinds of people inside and outside of the museum and university.
- Excellent writing and public speaking skills. Excellent teaching skills, including at the university level.
- Comprehensive and specialized knowledge of art history or related discipline in one or more of the gallery’s collection areas. General knowledge of art history and cross-disciplinary studies across the Gallery’s collection areas.
- Preferred Education and Experience: Experience working in a university museum environment.
