Position: #104019 Curator of Education and Outreach, University of Delaware

Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and Museums, the Curator of Education and Outreach performs the following responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage innovative educational programs and tours around exhibitions in multiple campus locations including: Old College Gallery, Mechanical Hall Gallery, Morris Library and the Mineralogical Museum in Penny Hall
  • Offer gallery talks and other programs for students, alumni, and the general public
  • Collaborate with staff to develop educational initiatives to broaden the impact of these exhibitions on campus, and offer tours to students from UD and other institutions, as well as the general public
  • Work with the faculty to define and develop new approaches to engage students and reinforce class topics through museum exhibitions and study of the collections. Assist faculty, students and staff in the use of resources as necessary
  • Serve as a liaison between Special Collections and Museums and the University faculty
  • Promote the Museum programs to the University students, community, and the general public through the press and social media
  • Heighten awareness of the Museums through outreach, including electronic and social media
  • Maintain the Museums website
  • Participate in exhibition planning to optimize the educational potential of installations and exhibitions
  • Evaluate program effectiveness; may conduct visitor studies and other analyses
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Art History or an M.F.A. in the Visual Arts, with a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience including teaching undergraduate students in an academic or museum setting
  • Broad knowledge of the visual arts with a particular interest and strength in one or more of the followings fields: 20th century American art (particularly graphic arts), photography, printmaking, contemporary art. An interest in the history of printed materials is a plus.
  • Well-developed communication skills to include public speaking and writing
  • Knowledge and interest in social media and other potential outreach strategies, experience or willingness to learn web development
  • Ability to work well as part of a small team within a university environment and to develop and promote connections between objects and a variety of university disciplines.
  • Ability to work with a variety of constituencies in a diverse environment.
  • Availability to work variable hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

General Information:

The recent merger of Special Collections and Museums at the University of Delaware Library brought together a diverse collection of art, with special strengths in American art of the 20th century (especially prints, photographs and work by African American artists), European prints, Inuit art, Pre-Columbian art and minerals, with books, manuscripts, broadsides, periodicals, pamphlets, maps and ephemera from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. Art exhibitions in Old College Gallery and Mechanical Hall Gallery, mineralogical exhibitions in Penny Hall, and exhibitions in the Morris Library engage students, scholars, the UD community and the general public. Collaborative initiatives and programming with students, faculty and departments across campus foster diversity and enhance interdisciplinary research and teaching.
