The University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) is a premier Pacific Northwest museum for exhibitions and collections of historic and contemporary art based in a major university setting. The mission of the museum is to enhance the University of Oregon’s academic mission and to further the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts for the general public. The JSMA features significant collections galleries devoted to art from China, Japan, Korea, America and elsewhere as well as changing special exhibition galleries. The JSMA is one of seven museums in Oregon and the only academic art museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
University Advancement is responsible for strategically positioning the UO with its various constituents and securing resources to further its aims. The division consists of approximately 200 employees primarily working out of Eugene, with offices in Portland and Bend. Departments within University Advancement include: Advancement/UO Alumni Association; Development; Stewardship and Special Events; Advancement Operations; Federal Affairs; and State and Community Affairs. University Development is a comprehensive fund raising department with an overall mission to sustain and enhance excellence at the University of Oregon through securing and stewarding philanthropic gifts; to raise funds from private sources to fund priorities outlined by the university’s faculty and administrative leadership.
The Sr. Associate Director of Development for JSMA is the lead fundraiser for the Museum. The position is responsible for developing and executing an aggressive and comprehensive fundraising plan for JSMA that includes the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and new prospects as well as grant oversight. This position will concentrate equally on maturing the donor pipeline (soliciting gifts between $25k-$100k) and building a major gift ($100k+) portfolio. In close partnership with Museum leadership, the position will be charged with sustaining and growing the highly successful Masterworks on Loan Program. Additionally, the position will be responsible for securing gifts to the Patron’s Circle, the JSMA’s leadership annual giving program.
The position is field oriented, requiring consistent travel and direct contact with donors and donor prospects. The Senior Associate Director will be responsible for meeting fundraising goals and expectations as they relate to the strategic needs of the university and JSMA. Performance as measured against these goals will be evaluated annually. This position reports jointly to the Executive Director of JSMA and the Assistant Vice President for Constituent Development Programs.
• Bachelor’s degree
• Two years of professional or volunteer experience in development AND two years of frontline fundraising experience OR 10+ years of experience in a closely related field such as corporate sales, wealth management, etc.
• Proven ability to secure visits with donor prospects, build a pipeline, and solicit both outright and deferred gifts over $25,000.
This position requires the ability to travel to sites not regularly served by public transportation, by personal or state vehicle or other means and willingness to travel up to 60% of time.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and a strong sense of donor-driven customer service.
• Ability to make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospective donors to specific university needs.
• Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and equity.
• Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office software suite; preference for familiarity with development or sales databases.
• Ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• If work experience is in a non-development field, preference will be given to those with relevant experience in the development field.
• Development experience working for an art museum or in a related arts field that includes cultivation of collectors and familiarity with the international art world.
• Demonstrated experience working effectively with volunteers and volunteer boards.
