Yale Art Gallery – Programs
The Jock Reynolds Programs Fellowship is intended for an emerging professional in the arts who is considering a career in museum programs. This is a two-year fellow with the possibility of renewal for a third year. The Programs Department at the Yale Art Gallery supports a wide range of engagement opportunities, including in-gallery artist talks, studio workshops, musical performances, poetry readings, film screenings, scholarly lectures, and study days. Reporting to the Associate Curator of Programs, and working collaboratively across departments at the museum, the university, and the broader community, the Fellow will be fully integrated into the department and gain broad-based experience in museum programming, including researching, writing, coordinating, collaborating, teaching, and implementing of programs. The Fellow will: participate in and contribute to all aspects of the department’s activities, from planning to execution; conduct research to support programs; encourage direct encounters with objects and audience engagement; welcome visitors and assist with reservations; represent the Gallery among our multiple audiences in the Yale and New Haven communities; support broadening programming offerings. Additional duties as needed. Regular evening and weekend work will be required. Required Education and Experience:
M.A. in Art History or related field.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated interest in university museums, contemporary ideas and culture, cross-discipline approaches, and community and audience engagement.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills; demonstrated ability to communicate with museum staff and public in a knowledgeable and professional manner; ability to connect with diverse audiences.
- Self-directed; ability to take initiative and anticipate actions needed.
- Demonstrated ability to be a team player in an active museum environment. Positive attitude that supports department’s goals.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet demanding deadlines; ability to work well under pressure. Demonstrated accuracy and strong attention to detail.
- Preferred Education and Experience: MA in studio art, art history, education, public humanities, or relevant field; 1-2 years of programming/teaching experience in an art museum. Strong interest/familiarity with museums; commitment to object-based research and engagement; Knowledge of PC software programs, including word processing, database and desktop publishing; Ability to learn TMS, scheduling and registration software.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50 pounds.
