Design to Survive

DESIGN TO SURVIVE
As we become accustomed to living in the Anthropocene and the evolving conditions that define this state, design is also responding to climate change, diminishing resources and air quality, among other dynamic forces. The inventive
development of new materials that do not contribute to the deterioration of our planet, like algae and mycelium, the proliferation of zero emissions products, and 100% recyclable products and materials are all hopeful and helpful steps.

Recognizing a marked shift from resource reduction to quite literally designing for survival, this exhibition seeks to present projects and proposals that go further, to ameliorate inhospitable conditions—or at least allow survival despite a deteriorating eco-system. After years of climate alarm bell-ringing, perhaps designers are reflecting the new reality that we have now passed the point of no return and understand that design must change course as well. The exhibition introduces this approach to design.
