EUGENE MARTIN: THE CREATIVE ACT

Celebrate the remarkable career of one of America’s most original artists, Eugene James Martin (1938–2005). Featuring thirty-one original works spanning four decades, the exhibition traces Martin’s lifelong exploration of line, color, shape, and imagination while introducing audiences to his innovative concept of heterochronic collage—the practice of incorporating earlier works into new compositions, allowing multiple moments in time to coexist within a single artwork.

Martin overcame extraordinary hardship to develop a singular artistic vision rooted in experimentation, personal expression, and the limitless possibilities of nonrepresentational art. His vibrant paintings, intricate drawings, and multilayered collages blur the boundaries between memory, imagination, and observation, inviting viewers to discover recognizable forms while embracing the freedom of visual exploration.

Designed for audiences of all ages, the exhibition offers an engaging introduction to abstract art through accessible interpretation, and close looking.

EXHIBITION PACKAGE

LOAN SPECIFICATIONS

• Loan fee: $2,500 for a standard term of up to sixteen (16) weeks; extensions beyond sixteen (16) weeks will be prorated
• Borrower is responsible for round-trip transportation via a lender-approved fine art carrier
• If the exhibition is shipped directly to another borrowing institution, cost-sharing of transportation expenses between borrowers is permitted
• Prior to approval of the loan, the borrower must provide an up-to-date facilities report
• The borrower is responsible for wall-to-wall fine arts insurance coverage for the duration of the loan and must furnish a Certificate of Insurance prior to the release of the exhibition; contact the LSU Museum of Art to obtain the full insurance valuation
