God-Shaped Hole
Traveling exhibition title: God-Shaped Hole

God-Shaped Hole, is an interdisciplinary exhibition of ceramics, printmaking, and performance created by Edward Steffanni. This exhibition was recently highlighted in the March-April edition of Museum Magazine by the American Alliance of Museums.
The title of the exhibition, God-Shaped Hole, takes a Christian belief – that each of us carries a void within that can only be filled with God – and reinterprets it from the perspective of the queer community. What connects these points of view is a feeling of innate longing, a desire to be embraced, made whole, and belong; something that the artist suggests all viewers can identify with in some aspect of their lives, regardless of identity. exploring the connections between the queer body, spirituality, and nature. God-Shaped Hole draws parallels between the obscuring of sexual orientation and hunting in nature as the artist considers concealability and the surveillance of the queer experience.
Steffanni looks forward to collaborating with exhibiting institutions for workshops and community engaged projects as the work continues to be exhibited. During its first installment at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University, Steffanni created a zine archive that compiled museum visitors coming out stories, poetry, and images related to concealment and queer identity.
Object labels, wall labels, and text panels are provided.
