Job Description:

Reporting to the Provost and Dean of the College, the Director of the Cantor Art Gallery will be responsible for all aspects of the Cantor Art Gallery’s fine art exhibition program and its year round operations, including selecting, curating, developing, and scheduling exhibitions and related programming that proactively and creatively engages the lives of students, faculty and staff as well as the greater Worcester, surrounding communities, and beyond. The Director acts in a leadership capacity to advise and partner with faculty to co-curate exhibitions related to the curriculum. In addition to overseeing all operational and administrative aspects of the Cantor Art Gallery itself, the Director is responsible for the oversight and care of the Gallery’s permanent collection of 2,000+ objects.

The Director also develops events and educational programming to amplify the pedagogical goals of the College, while providing opportunities for students and visitors to experience a range of contemporary and historical art, learn about individual artists, art movements, and culturally diverse subjects.

Gallery Structure and Collaborations

The Cantor Art Gallery resides within the Provost’s area and is heavily integrated into the academic and intellectual life of the College. The Director is aided in this work by an assistant director of communications and operations, a student staff of gallery guards, and independent contractors hired by the Director to assist with the handling and preparation of exhibits. In addition to the wide range of academic departments across the College and their faculty and students, the Director works closely with administrative offices including the Office of Risk Management; Public Safety; Graphic Arts; Communications and Marketing; and Campus Facilities.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Broadly reflecting the mission and pedagogical goals of the College, curate as well as partner with faculty and independent curators on original and diverse contemporary and historical art exhibitions that challenge and engage the academic, intellectual, and creative lives of faculty, students and staff, as well as the Worcester community.
  • Plans exhibition and associated programs on a multi-year schedule for the Cantor Art Gallery and the Cantor Foundation Resource Gallery
  • Engages with and supports faculty across all disciplines and guest curators to develop special exhibitions
  • Works directly with the Visual Arts Department on the annual senior visual arts majors’ thesis exhibition
  • Plans, coordinates and executes the installation of all professionally presented exhibitions, including the design and layout; transportation and receipt of artworks; handling and un/packing and storage of materials; and arranging for pedestals, framing, and other installation materials
  • Coordinates gallery publications including announcements, print and digital advertising, and exhibition catalogs
  • Manages the Cantor Art Gallery Permanent Collection
  • Catalogs and maintains a digital photographic inventory of all objects in the permanent collection
  • Provides for the on-going care and conservation of works on permanent display throughout the campus
  • Oversees and coordinates the lending of works from the permanent collection to other institutions as well as to offices, departments, and buildings across campus
  • Organizes the acquisition of new works to the permanent collection
Gallery Leadership and Operations
  • In support of the work of the Gallery, its exhibitions and collections, develops and collaborates on the development of educational programming, workshops, tours, guest lectures, and other outreach activities to the College, the local Worcester community, as well as public school programs
  • Supervises and provides leadership for gallery employees and student staff
  • Oversees press releases and wall texts, and oversees the graphic design of gallery signage
  • Develops and manages the budget of all gallery operations
  • Seeks grants and other external funding
  • Acts as the primary liaison to the Cantor Foundation
  • Builds and maintains professional relationships with arts organizations, art collectors, and artists, and other art museums and galleries
  • Insures safety and security measures for exhibitions and collections are maintained
  • Oversees all equipment, physical resources, and storage spaces utilized in support of the work of the Cantor Art Gallery
  • MA or MFA in studio art, art history, arts administration, museum studies, curatorial studies, or other relevant discipline or field; PhD desirable.
  • 3-5 years curatorial and administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated experience academically and intellectually engaging diverse groups through programming and outreach
  • Exposure to a broad spectrum of art museum or gallery operations, including collections management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a strong emphasis on relationship building across different groups and disciplines
  • Understanding of the importance of liberal arts education
  • Demonstrated project and staff management experience
  • Demonstrated budget and finance management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and to meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
