Job Description:
The Opalka Gallery of The Sage Colleges seeks an experienced, highly motivated director to lead this nationally recognized art gallery located in New York’s capital city. A world-class exhibition space with a primary mission of showing work from nationally recognized artists, the Opalka Gallery serves as an integral part of aesthetic and academic emphases of The Sage Colleges.

The director’s role combines chief curatorial responsibilities with gallery management duties. This position has an anticipated start date of May 1, 2017.  In addition to mounting four to six exhibitions per year, the successful candidate will enhance the academic programs of the institution by acting as a liaison to faculty and by seeking opportunities for collaboration to link exhibits to educational programming.

Requirements:
Requirements for the position include a graduate degree in a field closely related to visual art, including but not limited to art history, visual arts, or arts administration, at least three years of gallery management experience that includes a record of curating and installing exhibitions, and evidence of success in critical writing, publicity, exhibition design and preparation. This position requires some regional travel and evening and weekend hours as events dictate.

The ideal candidate will have a proven record in grant writing and funding, experience in higher education and evidence of successful grant acquisition. The director is responsible for creating and maintaining a budget, supervising gallery staff and teaching one course per year in the area of his or her expertise.  The director acts as an institutional liaison to the arts community and represents the gallery at local, regional and national conferences and events. Experience with catalogue publication, public programming and ability to collaborate across the curriculum a plus.
