Job Overview

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking an Assistant Director, Museum Grants and Stewardship, for The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. DAR is responsible for leading the university’s alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWUs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

This development position supports The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum, which opened at GW in 2015. The museum connects the public and the GW community with opportunities to explore global art and culture and local history. Its exhibitions, programs, and collaborations are inspired by its collections of international textile art as well as artifacts that trace the evolution of Washington, D.C. Based at the museum, the museum development team raises $2M-$6M annually to support exhibitions, programs, scholarship, and collections care.

Reporting to the Museum’s Executive Director of Development, this position is responsible for grant writing and reporting to foundations and government agencies to secure and steward up to $350,000 in annual support for museum operations and special projects. This position also coordinates stewardship of the museum’s major donors, annual donors, members, and board members, especially through drafting print and digital communications.

Responsibilities

• Plans, writes, and prepares grant inquiries, proposals, and progress reports to foundations and government agencies for museum operations and projects to assist the Executive Director of Development with achieving up to $350,000 in annual grant revenue. Coordinates with GW’s Office of Sponsored Projects on submitting grant proposals and reports. Coordinates with the Foundation Relations team within GW’s Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) on identifying foundation prospects and setting the strategy for applications. Assists museum development staff with preparing funding proposals to individual and corporate prospects as needed.

• Plans, writes, and prepares digital and print communications that steward relationships with museum donors and members, including but not limited to customized stewardship reports, gift acknowledgments, event invitations, donor recognition signage, email communications, and museum magazine content. Coordinates as needed with the Donor Relations team within GW’s Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) on design, production, and dissemination of these materials.

• Trains students, through internships and coursework participation, from museum studies, nonprofit management, and related disciplines in grant writing, development communications, stewardship, and development best practices, thus contributing to GW’s educational mission.

• Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

•  Experience in a museum, cultural nonprofit, and/or higher education.
•  Exceptional written and verbal communication and time management skills are strongly preferred.
•  Experience with grant writing is strongly preferred.

Typical Hiring Range:  $55,000-$65,000
Job Location: This full-time position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with a weekly schedule of 3 days in the office in Washington, DC, and 2 days of telework.
