Position Focus:   Reporting to the Director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications will be an energetic content leader who will facilitate a dynamic public image for the Museum, and will provide oversight for the effective communication of the Museum’s identity, program, and mission.   At the Yale Peabody Museum we are working on Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion institutional priorities so that we can learn to better serve our communities, amplify marginalized voices and perspectives, and create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. Essential Duties:   1. Develops and implements a publicity and communications strategy that promotes the Museum’s programs and activities as an important part of Yale’s cultural offerings. 2. Serves as the primary point of contact with the media and is the Peabody’s liaison with the local arts organizations and community. Draws public interest and promotes awareness of the Museum’s role in education, research, and community activity. 3. Works in partnership with curators and administrative staff to conceptualize, develop, and implement an overall communications strategy for promoting exhibitions, programs, public events, and acquisitions to the general public and university community. Identifies specific target audiences and determines and executes a strategy for reaching them. Strategizes and implements ways to grow and diversify audiences. 4. Develops, plans, writes, edits and distributes press releases, advertisements and other promotional material in alignment with a communication strategy. Establishes, develops, and maintains relationships with local, regional, national and international press. Creates and maintains media and other publicity mailing lists and decides how to maximize use of such lists. 5. Manage the Museum’s Digital Media Specialist and Graphic Designer, towards ensuring consistency of the Museum’s and Yale’s style guidelines. Manages the effort to rationalize and expand Peabody’s use of websites, e-mail marketing, and social media to reach target audiences. Analyzes online social media activity to determine strategies and opportunities for growing virtual audience engagement. Posts and updates event schedules and calendars on Peabody’s and Yale’s web and social media sites. 6. Manages and maintains email subscription lists and utilizes various software applications to prepare and schedule announcements to subscribers. 7. Collaborates with the Yale Office of Public Affairs and Communication to promote and support the Museum’s overall mission. Partner with local arts organizations to initiate opportunities to strengthen the Museum’s profile within Yale and the local community. 8. Serve as the primary contact for general public inquiries and requests for private tours and VIP visitors. 9. Develop an internal communication strategy for effective flow of news and information for Peabody staff, Curators, and the Museum’s Leadership Council.  

Required Education and Experience:   Bachelor’s Degree in Radio/TV/Film, English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field and four years of related development, communications and/or external relations experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.   Required Skill/Ability 1:   Superior leadership, oral, and written communication skills. Highly-motivated individual who brings entrepreneurial energy; strong self-starter with creativity, self-confidence and integrity.   Required Skill/Ability 2:   Excellent organizational, planning, and project management and implementation skills. Proven success in strategic planning and developing projects from conception to completion.   Required Skill/Ability 3:   Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with exceptional attention to detail. Self-directed multi-tasker with the ability to meet demanding deadlines, and regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment.   Required Skill/Ability 4:   Proven ability to build and maintain influence and trust with a wide array of constituencies. Excellent communicator and leader in all settings — with Peabody colleagues, University administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, and students.   Required Skill/Ability 5:   Ability to decipher environmental and scientific information in a manner appropriate for intended audiences.  

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:   Experience within a museum, preferably a natural history museum. Development or advancement background, with experience interacting with organizational stakeholders at all levels. Established relationships with New Haven community organizations and media. Demonstrated ability with email marketing systems. Proven skills in overseeing the production of videos, webcasts, and/or podcasts.   Drug Screen: No   Health Screening: No
