Chief Engagement Officer – Chazen Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin – Madison

Job Summary:

The Chief Engagement Officer will provide leadership for outreach and engagement at the Chazen Museum of Art. The Outreach and Engagement section includes public programs and education, marketing and communications, campus and community outreach, and the visitor services program. The position will create and uphold a visitor-focused and inclusive approach to museum outreach, collaborating closely across the museum to fulfill its mission as a teaching and learning institution. The Chief Engagement Officer also oversees strategic budget development and monitoring for the section.

This individual will supervise approximately four individuals, representing a team of approximately 15 employees. They will play a critical role in supporting employee development and a positive work culture, while upholding high standards for team performance. The Chief Engagement Officer will report to the Chazen Museum Director but may report to the Chief Operating Officer on an interim basis. This individual will be a key member of the museum leadership team, which includes the Director, Chief of Staff, Chief Curator, and Chief Operating Officer.

Responsibilities:

Directs development, supervision, and delivery of quality outreach programs. Establishes and facilitates strategic partnerships to support the growth and execution of programs. Promotes stable and productive relationships between the university and local community.

30% Directs the development of long range and short term strategic plans and initiatives to further the growth of the outreach program

10% Directs the organizational strategic goals of the programs and unit

10% Directs unit personnel and budgeted activities

20% Serves as liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing interest of the unit

5% Develops and monitors the budget

25% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees

Qualifications:

Candidates who do not have all of the following qualifications, but bring substantial leadership and vision to the role through other relevant professional experiences, are encouraged to apply.

– Significant leadership experience in at least one of the following areas: museum or arts administration, arts education and outreach, arts marketing and communications, community engagement, placemaking, high-end hospitality, or public programming.
– An advanced degree in a relevant area such as museum studies, art education, arts administration, business, or communications is preferred. Significant professional experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
– At least 5 years of professional experience in a supervisory role of full-time professionals, with 7 years or more preferred.
– Evidence of professional development as a supervisor, such as continuing education, is expected.
– Experience working with underserved communities and building partnerships is preferred.
– Experience coordinating a proactive and engaged outreach program at a museum, arts organization, non-profit, or similar institution
– Experiencing managing and/or overseeing marketing, social media, and publication content

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position requires most work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Approximately 8 hours per week work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $107,500 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Salary is negotiable based on experience. The median of the salary range is $117,365. Individuals compensated at or above median salary would be expected to have significant experience and all required knowledge. They would be seasoned professionals with particularly broad and deep knowledge of the position.
