The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology at Brown University seeks a Conservator to participate in a major project funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to perform a condition survey and prepare the collections for a move to a new museum setting.
The Conservator will report to the Deputy Director/Chief Curator and work with a team including the Museum’s Registrar, Curator, Photographer, and project-funded Collection Assistants to undertake a collection assessment for preservation planning in preparation for a move of 125,000 archeological and ethnographic objects to a new location in Providence, RI. As a member of the Museum’s Collection Committee, the Conservator will advise on preventive conservation needs, implementing best practices and supporting team training needs following a risk management framework. The Conservator will assess current collection needs in relation to the move plan, undertake occasional treatment to stabilize objects too fragile to move, develop a prioritized plan for future conservation needs, and document conservation priorities in the collection management database, MuseumPlusRIA. The Conservator will help to identify sources of funding and contribute to grant proposals that will expand the Museum’s capacity to undertake future conservation projects.
This is a full-time, hourly, Grade 9 (exempt), grant-funded position with full university benefits. The current grant is funded at least through the end of December 2022. Work will be done primarily at the museum’s Collection Research Center in Bristol, Rhode Island.
We require a Master’s degree (or certificate) in Conservation, expertise in ethnographic and archaeological conservation, and at least 2-3 three years of experience as a Conservator in a museum with similar collections. Experience using Articheck and a collection management system is required, with knowledge of MuseumPlusRia preferred. Candidates with BA/BSc degrees in fields related to anthropology, archaeology or museum studies, experience using pXRF in conservation, and experience in grant-writing are preferred.
