Job Summary:
The Curator at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art (BCMA) will oversee the Museum’s curatorial affairs and educational outreach. In this capacity, the BCMA Curator will advance the Museum’s mission to promote creative thought, inclusivity, and the common good through its exhibitions, collections, programming, and engagement with faculty, students, and the general public. With the guidance of the Curator, the Museum’s curatorial team will develop intellectually significant exhibitions and publications, continue to build a transhistoric collection of global art, support innovative object-based teaching and learning, mentor student interns, and promote access to and meaningful connection with the Museum’s resources for a diverse audience comprising the campus community and the general public.
A key member of the Museum’s senior leadership team, the Curator will report to the co-directors and will play an active role in the development of Museum goals and priorities.
To this end, the BCMA seeks a dynamic and experienced professional with an enthusiastic commitment to participating in the intellectual community found in a liberal arts setting, and to fulfilling the following duties and responsibilities in three key strategic areas:
Exhibitions, Collections Growth, and Public Programming:
- The Curator generates innovative and intellectually ambitious exhibitions and publications that support and reinforce the mission of the College and enhance the Museum’s permanent collection
- Promotes and contributes to the ethical acquisition of works of art in tandem with the Museum’s strategic collecting priorities and strategic plan
- Contributes to and supports active programming at the Museum, including inviting outside experts and making presentations about exhibitions and artworks, which reinforces the mission and priorities of the College and of the Museum
- Supports the sound stewardship of works of art
Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship:
- Works actively with faculty and museum staff to create an environment for innovative object-based teaching and learning
- Promotes access to collection for faculty and outside scholars for the purpose of object-based research and scholarship
- Participates actively in advancing scholarship, at the Museum and beyond, within the field(s) of academic specialization and in promoting and developing best practices for and addressing issues of interest to the museum community
- May from time to time have the opportunity to collaborate with a faculty member on curricular projects
Supervisory Responsibilities and Staff Relationships:
- The Curator reports to the Museum’s Co-Directors
- Supervises the Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Curatorial Fellow and the Curatorial Assistant and Manager of Student Affairs.
- Works actively with the Museum’s registrar and preparators in promoting the responsible movement and installation of works of art
- Works actively with, and may supervise, student interns
Education/Skills Requirements:
Advanced degree in art history or related field stressing visual culture and/or cultural heritage, with a minimum of four years of curatorial or equivalent experience, and a demonstrated commitment to furthering diversity and inclusivity in museum programs and exhibitions.
Ph.D. or equivalent experience preferred.
Track record of scholarly activities including publications and exhibitions that advance knowledge.
Broad knowledge of art history and ability to function both as a specialist and a generalist.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively on multiple projects within a deadline-driven environment.
Exceptional English-language writing, and public speaking skills.
Familiarity with digital technology for purposes of documenting and working with collections in addition to promoting new modes of scholarship.
Experience organizing loan exhibitions.
Supervisory experience.
Standard Work Days and Hours:
Generally first shift, M – F, 8:30 – 5:00. This position requires attendance at a variety of programs and art museums’ related activities, some of which occur in the evenings and/or during weekends. This position will also necessitate occasional travel.
Full Time Year Round Position
