Curator of Education – Mulvane Art Museum, Washburn University

The Curator of Education for the Mulvane Art Museum plays a key leadership role in conceptualizing and developing mission-centered educational programs that connect the academic and local community to the Mulvane’s permanent collection and exhibitions. The Curator for Education partners with academic units across the campus of Washburn University, public schools, and the community to create learning opportunities that encompass STEAM, (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility), and variety of visual methodologies including VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies). Programs may include, but are not limited to seminars, lectures, workshops, tours, classes, Art Lab activities, experience stations, and supervising students and docents.

Essential Job Functions

Develop programmatic impact goals to ensure mission and strategic alignment, creative engagement, and learning across all demographics. Partner with departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and across campus to integrate museum resources into student learning outcomes.
 
Strengthen the academic role of the museum within the university and grow student/faculty participation; foster collaboration and agency in and with the museum by conceptualizing and developing flexible, multi-disciplinary programs, activities, and other curricular support which support the mission of the University and utilizing DEIA initiatives.
 
Develop, implement, and supervise student workers, internships, and docent program that builds and strengthens opportunities for school tours, campus engagement, and hands-on activities, utilizing supplemental teaching techniques for non-arts curricula, including science, history, technology, engineering, and math.

Play an active role in the creation of educational and interpretive components during the development of exhibitions by providing input as its relates to text for educator guides and packets, press releases, special brochures, videos, audio and mobile content, response stations, Art Lab activities, participatory learning spaces, website content, and other digital learning platforms.
 
Integrate data collection, measurement, and assessment into museum processes and programs. Monitor effectiveness of program goals by gathering and analyzing qualitative and quantitative statistics, and other engagement metrics for evaluation, reports, and grants and funding proposals. 
 
Ensure timely and collegial responses to questions and feedback from visitors, schools, and others.
 
Collaborate to record selected programs for distribution via the website and social media and inform the execution of marketing, branding, and promotional activities that broaden the museum’s reach and increase stakeholder engagement.
 
Other job-related duties as assigned or appropriate.

Requirements

A Masters Degree in Art. Two years of relevant arts or museum experience. Knowledge of and experience with developing digital curatorial and educational projects. Effective writing skills.
