Position Summary

Reporting to the Museum Director, this position coordinates a variety of faculty and instructors’ requests to engage through a DEAI lens with the museum’s diverse collections and also coordinates planning logistics for faculty participation/collaboration in socially engaged exhibitions with DEAI focus (to develop a deeper understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion topics) that include community members as equal partners within the curatorial team. Thus, this position supports two program tracts:  provides outreach and DEAI lens to individual instructors teaching, researching, and engaging with the diverse museum collections, and assists in the coordination of socially engaged exhibitions that include faculty and specialists from diverse units as well as community stakeholders. This position serves the increased requests to integrate art (collections and exhibitions) into learning and engaged scholarship across the curriculum through a DEAI lens. The position also assists curators (as assigned) with the research, development, and implementation of collection access and changing exhibitions (scheduling software, billing, contracts, art handling) and also assists with research, writing, and securing image and reproduction rights for various collection and exhibition related didactics. This position supports, as needed, the development of educational training and instruction materials, and supports access to the collection by expanding documentation and digitization of art, moving and caring for the collection for study, exhibition and DEAI engagement.  The position provides support to the Director in collection and exhibition tasks related to integrating art into the curriculum.

  • Extraordinary project management and implementation skills (follow throughs, meets deadlines, works within established budgets and timelines, and implements programs and their assessment)
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with students, art museum staff, campus colleagues and faculty, and visiting guests and donors, all of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to collect and analyze and report quantitative and qualitative data to measure and report program impact
  • Exceptional follow through and time management skills
  • Must possess strong technology skills including website applications, word processing, design and spreadsheet and program management software
  • Ability to take initiative, find solutions, and proactively communicate this process to supervisor
  • Extraordinary ability to troubleshoot
  • Assist as assigned in the installation of art exhibitions and implementation of public programs

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in liberal arts or related field
  • Two to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in performing tasks related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May require certification in the area of employment

Other Qualifications

  • Proficiency in DEAI matters
  • Experience with research, writing and publication
  • Valid vehicle operator’s license
  • This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail, Internet and software provided by MSU necessary for this position

Desired Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field of art, art-history, design, culture, humanities or education; or curatorial or museum studies credentials; specialization in contemporary art
  • Two to Five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience in art gallery or museum environment
  • Experience in materials and handling of art, and collections care desired
  • Previous experience working as curatorial assistant

Summary of Physical Demands

This position does involve physically demanding work requiring lifting and moving of objects with frequent carrying of objects weighing 45 pounds or more for art handling and installations.
