Director of the Museum of Fine Arts

Florida State University (FSU) seeks a compassionate, engaging, innovative, and inspiring leader and educator with the desire and experience to develop dynamic programs in collaboration and consultation with the Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA) and College of Fine Arts faculty and staff. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, the director will provide artistic and executive leadership and will work with an active advisory council of university leaders as well as community educators to advance the museum’s reputation for excellence in North Florida, across the state, and throughout the country.

The successful candidate will have a degree in a related field; present a strong record of relevant experience in art museum/gallery operations to include administration, collections management, publications, budget development and oversight, and supervision of professional staff; possess excellent writing and communication skills, including established grant writing capabilities; demonstrate effective leadership and the ability to maintain effective working relationships by utilizing clear communication, appropriate delegation, and interpersonal skills; have the ability to work with diverse groups, including museum staff, university faculty and students, museum patrons, guest artists, guest curators, and volunteers/community members to develop annual programming that is inclusive of all populations and varied in topics and point of view.

The Director of the MoFA will be responsible for overseeing a team of three full-time and several part-time staff; managing the contributions of a faculty curator and other curatorial faculty as appropriate; planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing all museum activities thoughtfully designed to engage and inspire an annual audience of approximately 18,000 visitors; overseeing an annual budget in excess of $600,000; maintaining over 7,000 square feet of gallery space presenting from 8–10 original exhibitions each year; promoting and preserving a permanent collection of over 6,000 art works; teaching a 1-1 course load in museum studies and/or related areas; and grant writing to support essential museum activities and fundraising and cultivating collectors and prospective donors on behalf of the institution.
