Position Summary: The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University (MSU Broad Art Museum) invites applications from energetic educators committed to the transformative power of art to provoke dialogue and foster formative connections.

As a key member of the Education team, the Educator for Student Engagement + Access supports our efforts to build meaningful connections with our campus community. They work in close collaboration with students, faculty, and staff to promote engaged learning and creative activity at the museum. The position contributes to the content, methodology, and overall vision for university student learning and engagement through tours, in-gallery experiences, and student-focused programs. They will also be responsible for envisioning a new student ambassador framework and mentoring the group as they plan student-focused events and engage in targeted campus outreach.

An integral part of Michigan State University, the MSU Broad Art Museum supports the teaching, research, and outreach missions of the university through active engagement with ideas, artworks, and exhibitions. As the university prepares to launch a campus-wide arts strategy, this moment represents a unique opportunity to join the art museum staff in positioning the museum as a space that is relevant and responsive.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with Director of Education to identify short- and long-term goals for our 1). campus engagement strategy 2). university tour programs 3). student-centered programs 4). student ambassador group.
  • Work with education colleagues to shape pedagogy for object-based learning and curricula-based engagement with campus audiences.
  • Foster engaged learning experiences by developing, delivering, and evaluating dynamic inquiry-based tours and associated activities for university classes, student groups, and other audiences as assigned. 
  • Build university relationships and collaborative partnerships with students, faculty, and staff that promote the use of the museum and collection. 
  • Collaborate with education and other museum colleagues to develop interpretation plans and interactive spaces in the galleries and across the museum.
  • Build a new student ambassador framework. Serve as group mentor and work alongside student ambassadors to plan student-focused programs, create student resources, and engage in targeted campus outreach.
  • Cultivate partnerships and serve as a principal liaison to units across the University, from degree-granting colleges to student groups, that bring research on the Museum’s expansive collection and exhibitions to diverse and underserved audiences.
  • Incorporate anti-bias, anti-racist education philosophies and practices into programs and tours. Engage in ongoing professional development to build capacity and understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy, social justice issues, and anti-racist teaching practices.
  • Foster and establish relevant and reciprocal campus partnerships that aid the museum in building audiences, diversifying our reach, and ensuring access to a wide range of campus community members.
  • Evaluate effectiveness, maintain statistics and attendance tracking, and prepare monthly/annual reports for university tours, student programs, and campus ambassador student group.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the local, state, and national art and museum education community, stay current with recent research and writing, collaborate and network with other museum educators.
  • Work collaboratively with the Education team to offer general education and museum event support as assigned.

Required Degree: Masters -Humanities such as art, art history, art education, museum studies

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in humanities field with research that relates to areas such as art, art history, art education, museum studies
  • Three or more years of experience teaching or leading sustained engagement programs in a university, museum, gallery, community center or related educational organization

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of art and art history. Possess a broad understanding of the field of art history, including a range of periods, cultures, and artistic trends and a willingness to research outside of their area of expertise
  • Desire and competence to engage a diverse student population from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, ideologies, and populations
  • Experience in assessing learning outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to work across diverse cultures and styles at all levels within and external to the campus community
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate across organizational structures
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in developing educational experiences and programs that engage a broad student audience, and an academic community in particular
  • Experience in planning of projects and programs, from conception through implementation, with attention to operational details 
  • Demonstrated ability to speak to small and large groups
  • Ability to conduct group facilitation
  • Experience with grant writing on the local and national level
