Instructor/University Gallery Director

The Department of Art and Design at Indiana State University seeks a full-time University Gallery Director. This is a Faculty (non-tenure track) position, with responsibilities focused on working collaboratively with university and community arts partners to develop programming that enhances and supports the mission and vision of Indiana State University, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Art and Design. 

We seek a dedicated and collaborative professional able to work with University and community members to create meaningful and innovative community engagement and professional experiences for our students, the University, and our community.

This position is a probationary, 3-year, renewable contract. The possibility exists for a successful incumbent to transition to a tenure-track position in the future. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties include teaching one Curatorial Studies course and a one-credit Professional Practices class for exhibiting seniors per semester. The position has primary responsibility for successfully developing, curating, and installing exhibitions for several art galleries within ISU’s College of Arts and Sciences.  These include:

The 2,000 square-foot University Gallery, located in the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts. This is the flagship gallery space at ISU, where shows of national and international contemporary art in all media, exhibitions from the ISU Permanent Art Collection, and undergraduate and graduate student final and juried exhibitions are presented. The University Gallery typically hosts 6 exhibitions per academic year. Visiting Artists, art historians, and art critics exhibit their work, give workshops, critiques and lectures related to Gallery programming.

The Turman Galley is located in the Fine Arts Building, which was originally built in 1940 and recently underwent a $15M renovation. This gallery hosts 5 – 6 exhibitions per year in traditional and new media that are proposed and developed by students, faculty, and local and regional artists.

Located in historic Fairbanks Hall, the Bare-Montgomery Gallery, an intimate exhibition spacelocated under the building’s original stained-glass dome, is managed and run exclusively by students. 

The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of gallery or museum experience, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently on multiple priorities. A successful record of grant writing and management is essential, as is the ability to work professionally and collegially with department faculty and staff, university administration, visiting artists and community members. A post-baccalaureate degree in visual arts, art history, museum studies or a closely related field is required.
