Position Summary:
Langson IMCA is a start-up organization with limited, though growing,
personnel and financial resources within a large, established institution that
is part of the University of California public education system. It was
founded in 2017 following the gift to UCI of two important private collections
of California Art. Two years later, the university hired acclaimed art
museum leader and educator Kim Kanatani as its inaugural director to
guide the museum’s future, envisioned as the seminal investigator and
presenter of California’s influence and innovation through art. Langson
IMCA brings together students, faculty, scholars, artists, and other publics
to generate new knowledge and learning, and foster transformative
experiences inspired by California Art and its global contexts. Note: career appointment 50% time
The Langson IMCA Lead Preparator is a hands-on, detail-oriented
technician, who assumes the responsibility for preparation and installation
of the Museum’s temporary exhibitions and other art handling/preparatory
projects. Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Exhibitions and
Facilities Management, the lead preparator is responsible for museum-
quality art handling related to installation and de-installation, including;
receiving, packing and unpacking, handling, and displaying fine art objects;
planning and directing the fabrication of exhibition pedestals, temporary
walls, didactics and other display designs; assuring and adhering to a safe
and healthy work environment through knowledge of best practices. The
lead preparator is a key team member for the Museum’s ambitious
schedule of exhibitions and collection use.

$24.91 – $25.43 (Hourly Rate) Expected Pay Range within the Full Salary
Range $24.41 – $29.02 (Hourly Rate)
Required:
• Demonstrates a good knowledge of professional museum
procedures and practices with an emphasis on art/object handling,
installation, packing and care with a minimum of two years of
experience in a museum or gallery setting
• Familiarity with presentation technology such as media players and
digital programming displays for exhibitions
• Proficiency in light carpentry, interior painting, and graphics
application and design
• Competent using power tools, wood/metal shop machinery, and
lifting apparatuses for de/install
• Familiar with reading and creating exhibition schematics and design
elements using Microsoft and/or Adobe CC software
• Must be able to work as part of a team and have good
communication skills and maintain professional working
relationships with all staff
Preferred:
• Possesses a valid driver’s license BA in Art, Art History or BFA
