Windgate Museum Internship: Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) at Utah State University seeks a graduate-level student (or spring 2016 graduating graduate-level student) interested in gaining curatorial and collections research experience through a Windgate Museum Internship. This paid internship will take place over a three to four-month period beginning mid-June 2016 and provide the exciting opportunity to work with our curatorial staff to research NEHMA’s ceramics collection with three specific projects and outcomes in mind.

First, the intern will work with curatorial staff to select objects, research and write didactic material for display in a new ceramics visible storage in the Museum created as part of a building expansion/renovation taking place during the 2016-17 academic year (reopening the museum in the summer/fall of 2017). The second project will be to take this content, along with additional content/information not possible to include in display didactics, and add to the Museum’s new website (launching spring 2016), improving and expanding access to our ceramics collection online. The third project is to assist with selecting objects to include in a planned, future “Highlights from the NEHMA Ceramics Collection” exhibition, which will be accompanied by a substantial and scholarly illustrated catalogue and microsite of the Museum’s website.

The intern will gain experience working directly with a craft collection in a museum setting; develop curatorial experience with the curatorial staff on specific projects; gain a deeper understanding of 20-21st century studio ceramics; and contribute to expanding access to the Museum’s ceramics collection both within the museum and online. The intern will also acquire arts administration experience pertinent to museums such as collection care, didactics, project management, teamwork and time management.

The intern will work with the Rebecca Dunham, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, as well as other curatorial and collections staff members.

This internship is sponsored by The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design with support from the Windgate Charitable Foundation.

Eligibility Requirements

The intern must be an enrolled or graduating spring 2016 graduate-level student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who has a basic knowledge of ceramics as well as a sincere interest in the curatorial and collections areas of working in a museum setting. Additionally, the selected intern will demonstrate an interest in deepening their understanding of 20-21st century studio ceramics and studio craft. Advanced knowledge of ceramics will be helpful, but is not required.
