Clinical Faculty, Art History / Director – The American Museum of Asmat Art

The University of St. Thomas, Department of Art History, seeks applicants for a full-time, benefit-eligible, Art History Clinical Faculty member and Director of the American Museum of Asmat Art (AMAA). The position is responsible for the supervision and development of the collections of the museum, for the development and mounting of exhibits, for outreach and engagement of the collection to a broader public, for working with and training students as assistants and attendants with the AMAA, and for teaching art history and museum studies classes at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

The ideal candidate will show evidence, in their scholarly work and teaching, of an interest in and ability to bring diverse academic perspectives to bear on questions of art history, curatorial and collections work, and museum studies. As Director, the position is responsible for the supervision of the American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas. This includes the development and mounting of exhibitions in the Gallery of the Anderson Student Center and elsewhere on campus, outreach of the collection to a broader public, working with the Asmat Advisory Board, recommending decisions on the acquisition and exhibits of artwork according to professional standards and the mission of the museum, the training and supervision of attendants and assistants working with the collection.  As a clinical faculty member, the position will teach two courses per year in the Department of Art History. These may include an introductory art history course, upper-level undergraduate course, or graduate seminar in area of expertise and/or museum studies. The position will also supervise independent student research. It is strongly desired that the Director be engaged in the discipline, presenting research at conferences or in publications. The Director will work with members of the Art History Department, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Asmat Advisory Board, and the Development Office to develop programs that sustain our mission for the collection.


Qualifications: Ph.D. in Art History or related field preferred, A.B.D. or M.A. with significant curatorial experience and publications will also be considered. At least two years’ experience with the development and maintenance of an art collection, including public outreach, and with the development and installation of exhibits and related didactic research and materials desirable.  Knowledge of Asmat art and culture is strongly desirable, Pacific, Oceanic, global, or nonwestern art desirable. Museum studies expertise is also required for this position.

Invited candidates will be expected to give a classroom lecture, a research presentation, and pitch a museum exhibition proposal.
