The Weatherspoon Art Museum (WAM) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director. Since its founding in 1941, WAM has worked to inspire acquisitions, exhibitions, and programming that support increasingly diverse academic and community audiences. A nationally recognized modern and contemporary art museum with seminal works by Robert Colescott, Willem de Kooning, Eva Hesse, and Alison Saar, the Weatherspoon serves more than 38,000 visitors annually and has an operating budget of just over $2 million.
The next Director will lead a dynamic university art museum, with a high-quality collection and exceptional exhibitions, and help WAM reach its fullest potential through increased excellence and innovation. This is a remarkable opportunity for a forward-thinking leader, savvy in museum management, to work with a talented team, University faculty and leadership, and two volunteer boards, to set the vision for the future of the museum, provide focus, and establish priorities Reporting to the Provost, the Director will be a talented relationship builder who will utilize this remarkable and respected institution to increase regional and national visibility and recognition. This individual will connect the museum’s collection, exhibits and programs to the academic mission of the University in creative ways and engage the vibrant, growing arts community in Greensboro. The successful candidate will welcome and engage a diverse audience of visitors and supporters around interdisciplinary issues of local and global importance.
