The Engagement Manager for Exhibitions and Programs reports to the Executive Director of the Center for Design and Material Culture (CDMC) and is responsible for consistently managing high-quality exhibitions and programs across the Ruth Davis Design Gallery, the Lynn Mecklenburg Textile Gallery, and the new Dorothy O’Brien Innovation Lab, as well as innovative programming and outreach that supports the material culture, textile, and design thinking pillars of the CDMC’s mission.


55% Exhibitions
– Serves as a subject matter expert and point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding the CDMC pillars of material culture, textile and design thinking as well as collection information and access.
– Manage physical and logistical aspects of exhibition creation, including design, installation, strike, and staffing schedules for the galleries as well as managing exhibition assets for online exhibitions and digital use.
– Works with the CDMC preparator, individual exhibition curators, and student gallery attendants to install and manage exhibitions. May supervise students and volunteers.
– Manage physical spaces of the Ruth Davis Design Gallery, the Lynn Mecklenburg Textile Gallery and the Dorothy O’Brien Innovation Lab.
– Provides budgetary input and subject matter expertise in support of funding requests

45% Program Development and External Relations
– Participates in the development of exhibitions or displays and educational resources to ensure delivery of varied, innovative programming to consolidate and attract new and diverse audiences and enhance awareness and understanding of CDMC mission.
– Develops and maintains relationships with colleagues and students across campus, community organizations, donors, collectors and corporations. Work on social media outreach, online exhibits, press releases, and creative storytelling to support these goals.
– Designs, develops, and delivers instruction related to CDMC exhibitions and projects to students, community members, faculty, visiting researchers, and donors
– Leverage the expertise of researchers, student workers, and volunteers to expand the programming possibilities of the CDMC.
– Consider ways the CDMC can support design and material culture throughout SoHE in collaboration with Design Studies faculty and other campus faculty who are affiliated with CDMC.

BA/BFA degree in art, design studies, art history, history, anthropology, English or related field required. MA or MFA in design studies, art, museum studies, education, nonprofit management, art history, history, material culture, design studies, or related field preferred.


Minimum of three years of post-baccalaureate work experience with increasing responsibility in museums, galleries, libraries, academic centers, or other nonprofits; project management experience.


– Experience with at least one aspect of the CDMC’s tripartite focus on material culture, textiles, and design thinking.

– Professional museum, library, nonprofit, art, or project management experience

– Experience with managing multiple projects concurrently

– Experience with exhibition design and installation

– Experience managing website content

– Excellent written and oral communication skills

– Experience or demonstrated ability in communicating with diverse audiences

– Experience mentoring and collaborating with students and/or colleagues

– Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
