Gallery Academic Outreach Coordinator – Tufts University Art Galleries

This is a benefits-eligible, part-time position, working 17.5 hours per week.
The Tufts University Art Galleries are dedicated to the presentation of art and the pressing issues of contemporary arts discourse. They are pedagogical spaces where exhibitions, lectures, performances, and artist residencies converge to animate the intellectual life of the greater university community and beyond.

The University Art Galleries department oversees the exhibition spaces in the Shirley and Alex Aidekman Arts Center on the Medford/Somerville Campus, the galleries at the SMFA at Tufts in Boston, and the Tufts University’s Permanent and Public Art Collection. The Galleries produce three to four main exhibitions each semester between the two campus locations alongside 15-20 curricular-driven installations per year.

The Academic Outreach Coordinator will collaborate with faculty to help them align exhibition- and object-based learning with course objectives across the curriculum. They will draw from the rotating exhibitions program and Tufts University collections to facilitate discovery and pedagogical use of artworks; lead object‐centered teaching and research workshops for instructors across campus; and assist faculty and graduate students as they produce original research on collection objects. The Academic Outreach Coordinator will report to the Manager of Academic Programs, with a line to the Director, and support and expand the Manager of Academic Programs’ work of overseeing classroom visits, gallery and exhibition tours, manage and develop exhibition related programming as needed, and enable faculty collaborations that can range from a single class visit to small exhibition projects. As Tufts launches a Curatorial Studies concentration, this position will act as a key liaison for faculty and student-centric work, guiding and assisting original research and exhibition projects within the Art Galleries’ resources– which may run from gallery installations to temporary public art works to performances.


Minimum Requirements:

Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:

  • Bachelor’s degree and teaching experience.
  • Broad knowledge of art history.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (MA) and 5+years teaching experience preferred.
