Museum Object Photographers (2) – Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, Brown University

The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology (Brown University) will hire two photographers with demonstrated skill in photographing archaeological and ethnographic collections for archival purposes to work on two projects funded through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation documenting and rehousing the museum’s collections prior to their move to a new location. Due to the number of objects to be documented, we are prioritizing the ability to develop strategies for photographing and uploading large numbers of objects individually, quickly, and accurately rather than the ability to stage objects for reproduction in catalogs or exhibitions.

These are full-time, hourly positions (37.5 hrs per week) with university benefits but are term-limited by the end dates of the grants. The work will be done at the museum’s Collection Research Center in Bristol, Rhode Island, collaborating with a team including collection assistants, conservators, and curatorial staff. Photographers will be responsible for photographing objects, assigning identification codes to images based on existing naming protocols, and uploading them to the museum’s collection management system, MuseumPlus.

We seek candidates able to start as soon as possible, with applications accepted until the positions are filled. Successful candidates will hold a BA, BFA, or B.Sc. (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in a field related to the museum’s collections (anthropology, archaeology) and/or in Photography with training in documenting archaeological and ethnographic objects. At least two years of experience digitally documenting such collections and entering them into a Collection Management System (especially MuseumPlus) in a museum, archive, or library setting is required. Some background in anthropological or archaeological perspectives on material culture is preferred.

Applications will only be accepted through Brown University’s online hiring system and will not be considered without a current CV, a Cover Letter with the names of three referees, and will not be reviewed without a short portfolio of 6-8 original images documenting a clear knowledge of the skills required for archivally photographing archaeological and/or ethnographic objects in museum contexts. Multiple documents, not exceeding 5 MB (total) can be attached to your application by clicking the “upload” button at the bottom of the “My Experience” page of the application.
