(Job #18-82) Administrative Analyst/Specialist I (AA/S I NE), Gallery Director, $3,288-$6,162 per month, depending on education and experience; appointments are generally made at the beginning of the salary range. This is a full-time, 12-month, benefitted, non-exempt position with a one-year probationary period in the Department of Art.
Under the lead direction of the Department Chair, the Gallery Director will be responsible for providing leadership and overseeing two on campus galleries, the Reese Bullen and Goudi’ni Native American Arts galleries, directing the on-campus exhibition program and overseeing and managing the university’s permanent collection of works of art. The Reese Bullen gallery features exhibitions by professional artists related to areas of instruction in the Art department. The Goudi’ni Native American Arts gallery highlights the work of contemporary and traditional Native American artists.
The Department of Art is interested in a Gallery Director who will bring an innovative vision to our gallery programming that supports the mission of the university and the department. We are currently re-envisioning the mission, programming, and scope of our galleries and are looking for a director who can contribute to this process by engaging meaningfully with the various constituencies involved. The director will promote alignment between gallery programing and course curricula, further collaboration between academic departments, increase on-and-off campus engagement with gallery programming, and broaden relationships with local Native peoples and tribal nations.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic museum/gallery professional with curatorial vision and significant hands-on experience with all aspects of gallery work and collections management.
• Plans, curates and supervises the installation and de-installation of 4 exhibits per year in the Reese-Bullen gallery and 4 exhibits per year in the Goud’ini gallery.
• Completes exhibition design for all exhibitions.
• Serves as Goud’ini gallery board member.
• Oversees publicity, art movement, insurance and shipping for all exhibitions.
• Coordinates sales in relation to exhibitions.
• Plans and coordinates receptions and opening events for each exhibition.
• Supervises the three on-campus Student Access Galleries and coordinates exhibition planning with student interns.
• Provides direction to the part time Instructional Support Assistant I (ISA I) who assists with gallery preparation.
• Schedules and supervises interns and student workers who act as gallery assistants and gallery sitters.
• Oversees gallery budgets.
• Prepares IRA grants and other grants (eg. loyalty grants) as appropriate to support gallery programing.
• Oversees loans from the university’s permanent collection to offices on campus.
• Coordinates donations to the university’s permanent collection.
• Coordinates with off campus institutions that have borrowed from the collection.
• Communicates with outside scholars and off campus institutions about works of art in the university’s permanent collection.
• Oversees conservation of works of art from the university’s permanent collection.
• Catalogs works from the university’s permanent collection and maintains the collection database.
• Interfaces with prospective and current donors to the gallery and collection.
Minimum Qualifications: General knowledge and skills in museum and gallery practice and collection management, with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree OR through a combination of education and work experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position – primarily the ability to oversee exhibition design, installation, and fabrication and related gallery support functions.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of:
• Applicable policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to gallery administration
• Budget oversight and management
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the gallery with faculty, staff, students, and community members from diverse backgrounds and serve as a liaison for the gallery
• Cultivate relationships with artists, scholars, and other individuals in the contemporary art world
• Analyze and address problems using reasoning and the interpretation and application of policy and procedures to develop and recommend alternatives and best courses of action
• Analyze data and make accurate projections using business mathematics and basic statistical techniques
• Make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment
• Compile, write, and present reports related to the gallery and its collection
• Take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved
• Train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction
• Effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form
• PhD or MFA in Museum Studies, Arts Administration or a related field
• MA in Museum Studies, Arts Administration or a related field
• Experience working with or for Native American tribes, groups or organizations
• Experience in collections management
• Experience in exhibition design, installation and fabrication
• Professional experience in a university museum or gallery setting
• Professional experience in an educational capacity in a university setting
• Demonstrated experience with grant writing and securing external funding
• Experience in fundraising and developing and maintaining relationships with donors
• Record of museum/gallery related publications
• Experience working with K-12 student populations
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and cultural sensitivity in gallery operations and artist recruitment
